Community Initiatives in Wetland Management -
The Lake Waihola Waipori Wetland Complex

Abstract:

The Lake Waihola and Waipori area covers 2157 hectares including the two lakes. The wetland complex is the most significant water bird habitat in Otago, and is considered to be of national importance. The Lake Waihola Waipori Wetlands Society Inc. works with 21 landowners within the area to actively restore the wetlands.

 

 

About the speaker:

Paul Pope is the founder of Spiralis Ltd (www.spiralis.co.nz), an Environmental Solutions Consultancy. Paul has 22 years of experience in land, resource and environmental project management and works in wide variety of areas. With specialist skills in wetland and coastal habitat restoration Paul has worked with the Waihola and Waipori (www.waihola-waipori-wetlands.org.nz) community to undertake an ambitious weed control programme in the catchment that has been driven by local people.
